| Contrà´le technique |
| The 1998-04 Astra played second fiddle to the Focus; it's also cheaper to buy second-hand. Although it lacks the Ford's sharp styling and suffers from lacklustre interior design, it does everything well, promising reliable, affordable ownership. The cabin is family-friendly, with space for five adults in reasonable comfort. Load area is good; the estates will hold more than you'd think. Safety is bettered by some rivals: a strong body gained Astra four NCAP stars, but not all models have ABS and some lack a passenger airbag. Power is not a problem in petrol Astras: the 16-valve engines all feel eager. The 100 bhp 1.6i 16v is enjoyable, the 1.8i, 2.0i and 2.2i truly sporty. They're not the quietest units when worked hard, but overall refinement is good. Astra imparts driving pleasure with accurate steering, good roadholding and a supple ride. The driving position suits people of almost any size. |
